DOROT enables older people to maintain their independence and live with dignity in their own homes for as long as possible. Our programs provide food, housing, education and companionship to more than 10,000 seniors and their caregivers each year and bring the generations together. The agency provides social work support for all its programs. Socialization and Companionship: •Friendly Visiting recruits, trains and matches volunteers with homebound and other elders for weekly visits. Volunteers and seniors make a minimum commitment of one year and receive ongoing support from social work staff. •Holiday Package Deliveries sends volunteers to visit the elderly on major holidays, bringing packages of traditional foods and an hour's conversation. Thanksgiving Banquet and Meal Delivery hosts elders at a festive banquet and meal deliveries to the homebound. Health and Nutrition Services: •Kosher Meals for the Homebound supplies frail elders with weekly deliveries of nutritious frozen kosher meals, and reassurance. The program's emergency service delivers meals to elders in urgent need. •Shop and Escort provides homebound elders with a trained assistant for shopping, trips to the doctor, and walks outdoors. Escorts also shop for elders unable to leave their homes. Additionally, through DOROT's Door 2 Door and Hand-in-Hand programs, voluteers shop and perform errands for homebound elders and escort frail elders on errands, to the doctor, and to cultural events. •The Wellness Program offers a wide variety of classes at DOROT and over the telephone, and includes exercise, nutrition, relaxation, and meditation. Housing •Homelessness Prevention Program houses homeless elders in a supportive transitional setting with congregate meals, life-skills training, counseling and assistance in procuring benefits, and relocates them to safe, affordable permanent housing. "Aftercare" continues to give support to resettled elders, and helps to prevent the recurrence of homelessness.
