Health Advocates for Older People is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving and benefiting community seniors since 1985. We promote healthy aging through wellness programs and home safety assessments, helping seniors remain safely in their own homes. Our programs enrich the lives of older people with the tools, techniques and support they need to age with independence and vitality in the city they love.Our Healthy Aging Program provides senior wellness and socialization activities in the community. The weekly Tai-Chi, Chair Yoga, Alexander Technique, Reiki and Ballroom Dancing classes all promote strength, flexibility, and balance to keep us upright and mobile as well as provide mental stimulation to exercise the mind. Friday bridge, Saturday matinee movies and Meet the Author programs provide fun and companionship. Educational and health seminars like those provided on Saturday morning by the New York Junior League remind seniors of the important part they can play in their health and wellness.
We sponsor the Volunteer Program, which organizes volunteers ranging in age from 9 to 90 to provide services and support such as appointment escorts, friendly visits, telephone calls to say hello and to remind participants of upcoming programs. Many Healthy Aging Program participants also volunteer countless hours that keep our programs running smoothly by sending out the monthly calendar to the 550 program participants, sending a personal birthday greeting card to each participant and providing administrative support.
